Dance Ban: Footloose in Arizona

In the Arizona desert, Drew Carey discovers a modern-day "Footloose" story. A few years ago, Dale and Spencer Bell built a family oriented steak house with outdoor seating, fire pits, lots of old western style, and live music. But beware if you get the urge to scoot your boots--county officials have invoked an anachronistic ordinance that bans dancing outside.

Scariest fucking idiot of the week

John McCain trying to kiss the ass of the worst thing in America, the Christian Right, accepted today the endorsement of Christofascist Pastor John Hagee.

Bill Moyers Journal covered this issue a few months ago on PBS which scared my pants off. It's a look into the organization Christians United for Israel led by Pastor John C. Hagee. In short it is a universal call to all Christians to help factions in Israel fund the Jewish settlements, throw out all the Palestinians and lobby for a pre-emptive invasion of Iran. All to bring Russia into a war against us, causing World War III, followed by Armageddon, the Second Coming, and The Rapture so these Evangelicalfascists can all go to Heaven in their lifetime. The wholesale thirsty enjoyable murder of 7 billion people. And of course the Jews who now support them will all go to Hell. And Catholics! And they call Muslims crazy murdering fascists?

This all revolves around what is called Dispensationalism. We live in the Sixth Dispensation with the Seventh being what is often called the Millennium or the End Times. So popular is this thirst to have everyone in the world killed, that Tim LaHaye's Left Behind series has sold 65 million copies.

This is not some little group of misfits; they include Jerry Falwell's organization, Pat Robertson and his gang, 50,000 evangelical preachers and even Billy Graham. They are prodded on by the Likud, the powerful Israeli Lobby, American Neoconservatives and as you see in the video, supported by Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, megalomaniac Newt Gingrich and Texas Senator John Cronyn to name a few. As was the case in 2002 and early 2003 the war drums are beating once again not only throughout the GOP, a pre-emptive war with Iran seems inevitable, and if George Bush and company can pull it off in the next few months, that will be TWO of the worst mistakes in human history by ONE guy! And there seems to be no helping ourselves. It's more about religion than it is oil, two competing EVANGELICAL religions saying my way or the high way, Evangofascism.

Though the video speaks for itself but I would like to add something.

I was having an argument the other day about absolutes when my adversary claimed there was no such thing. I pondered that and indeed found it problematic. It took a few days but I finally came up with the only one I could. 100% of those who have said the world was coming to an end in their lifetime have been 100% wrong 100% of the time.

  2. Can it be shoddily built?
  3. Can I use cheap materials?
  4. Will it create hazards for my workers?
  5. Will it harm the environment?
  6. Can I evade the safety laws?
  7. Will children die from it?
  8. Can I overprice it?
  9. Can it be falsely advertised?
  10. Will it force smaller competitors out of business?
Excellent. Let's get busy.

The Ten Best Post-Apocalyptic Survival Vehicles

Dobbertin Surface Orbiter
SurfaceOrbiter.jpg

What happens when a well known hotrodder puts his tinkering hands to an amphibious vehicle? The Dobbertin Surface Orbiter. Built out of an old milk tanker, the Orbiter was designed to circumnavigate the globe on land and water, which is good for when you're on the move and forced to deal with the suddenly changing seasons that the nuclear fallout will likely bring. And like all good survival vehicles, it comes complete with a kitchen and porta-potti. It nearly made it around the world, but financial problems and an eventual divorce led to the trip getting cut short. Maybe YankBoffin and BlueCoupe would be all over that.

The Wothahellizat
The_Wotthehellizat.jpg

Certainly winner for the best name, Adidac425 was right to identify the Wothahellizat as one of the all-time great survival vehicles. If the Sportsmobile is minimalist, the Wothahellizat is maximalist. It's a motorhome on wheels, literally. Nature photographer Rob Fray used this to do his work across the Australian continent. The perfect vehicle for when you don't want to leave anything at your underground fallout shelter.

Don't Take My Word For It

"Acceptance without proof is the fundamental characteristic of Western religion, rejection without proof is the fundamental characteristic of Western science."
- Gary Zukav: The Dancing Wu Li Masters -

"The government has so far resisted the calls for a wider war beyond its present Gaza strategy of intense political pressure, a crushing economic embargo and frequent military strikes targeting those suspected of responsibility for the rockets. A full-scale invasion, officials say, could backfire and benefit Hamas, the armed Islamic movement that controls the territory. Israel also insists it does not want to be drawn back into Gaza less than three years after it withdrew its settlers and troops."
- Griff Witte: In Israel, Some See No Option but War -

"There is a frozen sea within us. Philosophy is an axe. Everything you believe is questionable. How deeply have you questioned it? The uncritical acceptance of beliefs handed down by parents, teachers, politicians, and religious leaders is dangerous. Many of these beliefs are simply false. Some of them are lies to control you. Even when what has been handed down is true, it is not your truth. To merely accept anything without questioning it is to be somebody else's puppet, a second-hand person. Beliefs can be handed down. Knowledge can be handed down. Wisdom can never be handed down. The goal of philosophy is wisdom. Trying to hand down philosophy is unphilosophical. Wisdom requires questioning what is questionable. Since everything is questionable, wisdom requires questioning everything. That is what philosophy is: the art of questioning everything."

Message for Clinton, Obama, and McCain

A PRESIDENTIAL
CAMPAIGN SPEECH THAT
WILL HELP YOU SWEEP THE POPULAR VOTE.

from McSweeneys

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you very much for inviting me to your wonderful state here in the great heartland of America but also pretty near the coast. It is an honor to speak from this podium, in this storied courthouse, where so many profound legal judgments were handed down that they more or less canceled each other out.

I am a simple man with a Harvard degree and a solid understanding of tractors. When I was a young boy, my father took me on his knee and told me the principle that has guided my life ever since: "Agree with some things, disagree with other things." His was truly the Greatest Generation, along with a few that came before and a couple that have come since.

Why am I running for president of the United States of America? That's a good question, and perhaps there's no good way to answer it. Or perhaps there is a good way to answer it. Either way, it's a good question and I'm glad it was raised.

I want to talk a little bit about our nation's children. Before this speech, a young man named Stanley Exley came up to me. Stanley is a mechanic, a noble profession if there ever was one. Or perhaps he is a chemistry professor, also noble. He was holding his small daughter, Emily, an adorable 3-year-old who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Stanley is a straight shooter, and he came up to me and asked me a question I'll never forget: "Do you like children?" And I looked him straight in the eye and said, "Yes, Stanley, I very much like children." Maybe that's not a popular opinion, but it's what I believe. And to those of you who would say, "I don't think children are our future," I must reply in the strongest of terms: "I disagree." Sometimes you have to take a stand for what you believe in.

Our country is sharply divided over a war that is being waged in a distant land. My views on this war are clear: it is happening, it is happening in Iraq, and it will continue to happen until it stops. Some people believe we should withdraw all the troops now. Some people believe we should stay and fight until we've established a stable nation. Some people believe we should gradually hand over control to the Iraqi government. I feel blessed to live in a country with so many beliefs.

On the subject of South African apartheid: I strongly, strongly, strongly oppose it. I'm glad it's gone, and I hope it never comes back.

The state of our economy is in flux. Every single day, the stock market goes up or goes down or stays the same. If elected president, I will ask the Federal Reserve to take a good long look at the interest rate and decide whether or not to change it. If elected president, I will create jobs where there are none, and where there are jobs, I will create internships.

Let us take actions that will make people happy.

Let us take actions that will make people healthy or perhaps have the private sector do it.

Let us take actions regarding taxes.

And let us move boldly so that our children and our children's children can look back and say, "I'm glad they moved boldly on this, this, and that."

Thank you.

Prozac, used by 40m people, does not work say scientists

Sarah Boseley, health editor

A single Prozac capsule

Prozac, the bestselling antidepressant taken by 40 million people worldwide, does not work and nor do similar drugs in the same class, according to a major review released today.

The study examined all available data on the drugs, including results from clinical trials that the manufacturers chose not to publish at the time. The trials compared the effect on patients taking the drugs with those given a placebo or sugar pill.

When all the data was pulled together, it appeared that patients had improved - but those on placebo improved just as much as those on the drugs.
